The attending doctors also participated in teaching an accredited continual medical educational course (CME) at the King Edward Memorial Hospital. Bill Keegan together with IMC’s team of doctors were awarded the prestigious "Bermuda International Citizenship Award" for producing one of the finest medical conferences ever produced in Bermuda. The Hon. Maxwell Burgess JP is a stalwart of the Bermudian political scene and has spent a lifetime in public service. As a Real Estate Agent, former Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and President of his neighborhood community cricket and soccer clubs, Maxwell is one of the most networked national figures in Bermuda. Equally comfortable in sports clubs, parliament and boardrooms, Maxwell’s story is uniquely impressive that in equal measure it touches Bermuda’s political, social and commercial development.
Maxwell was first elected to the House of Assembly as a Member of Parliament in 1983 by the constituents of his home base Hamilton Parish. He achieved the title of the youngest Cabinet Minister in Bermuda’s history when he was appointed the Minister of Youth, Sport and Recreation in 1984; a post he held until February 1989. It is to the trust and faith placed in him that some 24 years later, he is still retains the record of being Bermuda’s youngest ever Cabinet Minister.
In a mark of his leadership abilities and successes, as long as Maxwell was an MP in Government, he held the rank of ‘Minister’ serving as Minister of Transport and Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety. As Maxwell continuously occupied Ministerial Office he was at the vanguard of every major political development from 1989 until 1998 when the Government changed for the first time in Bermuda’s history.
Commercially, Maxwell was a member of the Cabinet Team and the Minister of Transport, who was responsible for the land that had served as a US Base lands that was returned to the people of Bermuda in 1995; the parcel represented nearly 10% of Bermuda ‘s entire land mass and the then Government created a Crown Corporation to commercially develop it for the benefit of Bermudians.
After 1998, Maxwell continued to assist his party until his retirement from party politics in December 2007, when he was the Opposition Leader in the Senate and Party Whip. The title ‘Honourable’ was bestowed by her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth for his years of service in Parliament.
In 2010, his company, M.A. Realty formed an association with international real estate brand Century 21 Bermuda Properties; a mutually rewarding partnership that ensures Maxwell remains at the cutting-edge of real estate advances both in Bermuda and elsewhere.
In continuation of his influence on the national stage, Maxwell was the first Chairman of the statutory Bermuda Tourism Board. He assisted with the implementation of the Tourism Board Act, which ensures that the Board is politically, financially, and constitutionally independent. In January 2013, Maxwell resigned as Chairman in order to have a more direct influence on tourism development in Bermuda and resultantly serves as Chair of the Product and Development Committee.
